Until recently, CCHS was working as best it could without any permanent space for housing these needy animals. In fact, not a single public animal shelter exists throughout the whole of Callaway County. Local animal control agencies, which are not designed to provide adoption or care services, are often full to bursting with stray and abandoned pets. Local police agencies deal with packs of roaming dogs, and find it impossible to enforce animal control and protection laws without a suitable location for housing animals removed from abusive homes or found loose in town. Animal shelters in surrounding counties, themselves often full to capacity and trapped for cash, end up shouldering the burden for Callaway County. In the end, thousands of unclaimed domestic pets die each year in our community, through starvation, disease, accident, or euthanasia.

The Callaway County Humane Society is now prepare to stand against this situation. Esther C. Yancy, a local resident, has generously gifted us 6.1 acres outside of Fulton, Missouri, where we will build the Callaway County Animal Shelter, a modern facility to house and care for these unfortunate animals. Capacity will extend to 108 animals at any one time, and the facility will include on-site surgery and veterinary facilities. Through this facility, we will be able to place more stray and unwanted animals with loving families, reduce the community dangers associated with free-roaming animals, and assist current pet owners through education and training services intended to reduce the number of pets abandoned or surrendered to humane facilities each year.

The Callaway County Animal Shelter, that will be located directly off highway 54 in Fulton, Missouri, will offer several proactive programs designed to improve the quality of life for domestic animals. Programs include:

  • Pet Education
  • Foster Homes
  • Pet Therapy
